Bold black and white Chanel inspired piece harked back to the glamour of the golden age of French Art Deco of the 20s.
This was part of the short-lived Post Modern series designed by Angelo Barovier, son of Ercole Barovier, in the late 1970s.  The body of the bowl was composed of fused layers of opal glass, white on the inside and light olive on the outside.  The prominent black rim on top wrapped like a mink stole, overlapping at the tapered ends.
While Ercole Barovier's much sought-after mid-century modern designs were the favorites of auction houses worldwide, Angelo Barovier was the mastermind in establishing the name of Barovier & Toso as a premium Italian brand since the late 1970s.   After the death of his father, Angelo introduced several series of Post Modern designs using traditional Murano glass-making techniques.  In the 80s and 90s, the firm concentrated more in the production of lighting fixtures and chandeliers.
The Economist's article on Barovier & Toso lamented the decline of the Murano glass industry.   More than 700 years and 19 generations later, Jacopo Barovier, headed the family-controlled firm of glassmakers that bore his name. The Toso family, whose ancestors began making decorative glass in the 17th century in Murano, a small cluster of islands across the lagoon from Venice, acquired one-third of the capital when the two firms merged in the 1930s. The result is one of the oldest family firms in the world.
On June 8 2015, Oikia 3, a private equity firm, bought Barovier & Toso.
